Alaska Airlines + Horizon Air -- return to normal operations

December 23, 2008

Cargo Operations Update --- Portland, Oregon .. and ... Seattle, Washington

We are pleased to report that Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air’s operations in Portland, Oregon, and Seattle are returning to normal after four days of flight cancellations and delays due to severe winter weather.

As we get back to normal operations, Alaska Air Cargo advises customers to pre-book shipments and to tender them as early as possible prior to scheduled departure times. We also advise you to check flight status on alaskaair.com as further cancellations and delays are possible due to changing weather conditions.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we contend with this unprecendented weather cycle that has disrupted travel throughout our region. If you have any questions, please refer to www.alaskacargo.com or contact your local Cargo Sales Manager .

We wish you and your family a safe and happy holiday season.

Alaska Air Cargo - Weather Cancellations & Delays

December 22, 2008

Cargo Advisory: Weather Cancellations and Delays

Yesterday, Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air announced they suspended all service into and out of Portland, Oregon, and Seattle due to severe winter weather and poor conditions at both airports. The snow and freezing rain that hit the region starting last week have severely impacted the airlines’ operations.

While many flights have resumed service today, we will be operating a significantly reduced schedule and customers are advised to check the status of their flight on www.alaskaair.com. The weather cancellations will have an impact on our cargo operation and we expect shipment delays throughout our system. Please feel free to contact our Cargo Service Center for system operational updates and shipment status.

We are making every effort to deliver the best possible customer service during this busy holiday season. Please note that many of our locations will be closed or have modified operating hours on Christmas and New Year's day. Our holiday schedule is now posted on our website where you can locate specific hours of operation for each location.

Alaska Air Cargo wishes you a safe and happy holiday. If you have any additional questions please refer to www.alaskacargo.com or contact your local Cargo Sales Manager .

5 species, 19 pets & animals .. a successful relocation
The task was daunting, as we planned the move of 5 horses, 2 pygmy goats, 5 chickens, 4 dogs, and 3 cats from Calabasas, California to St. Lazare, Quebec last week. The planning took place over a period of two months; involving the team work of three veterinarians in California, our Los Angeles service partner, and our northeast service partners, especially Mersant International for the cross country horse transport by air. From 12 noon on a Wednesday afternoon to early Saturday morning (3:00 a.m. to be specific)... the 19 pets and animals were moved successfully. We organized the small animals to move first from Wednesday afternoon in California to Newark, NJ by air ... with ground transport from Newark, NJ ... Quebec, with a border crossing at Champlain, NY / Lacolle, Quebec ... with delivery to residence in St Lazare concluding Thursday night. The five horses moved successfully by air from Los Angeles to Newark, with ground transport from Newark to the Champlain/Lacolle border crossing. The ground transport to St Lazare was concluded at 3:15 a.m. on Saturday morning. With great thanks to the professionals at the CFIA inspection station at Lacolle, Quebec, and the terrific cooperation of Canadian customs, the move went exceedingly well. An anecdote: after the chickens were gathered and collected in California, an egg was produced by one of the chickens prior to flight departure. Upon delivery in Quebec, another egg was produced. The relocatees simply stated, "the chickens were not stressed by the cross country and cross border relocation, as eggs were laid in both California and Quebec". And, "thank you for delivering our children to us".
